It doesn't surprise me at all that you have has students missing any of these things. I have been dancing for a year and I don't understand almost anything on that list.
I came out of gymnastics and country line dance where I had been my own, sole initiator. In my first WCS classes, my partners had zero dance experience so I felt impatient and frustrated with them. Thankfully, I cannot remember being unkind to them and I soon realized it was not their fault . Unfortunately, it lead to me thinking I could "help" them by back-leading. NOT!
I will never forget an epiphany I had in one of your classes. I had been dancing for about 1 1/2 years and took your intentive weekend starter course. I felt like I just wasn't "getting it." That class really filled in a lot of gaps for me, the biggest one being what is frame. Instructors kept mentioning 'frame' but no one had actually taken the time to break it down and explain the concept for me. That weekend was a huge break threw for me!
Wow, what an insightful point to ponder? I don't think I understood HOW to actually lead and follow, or even what the concept meant. I didn't understand how the follower could "just know" what to do. I didn't know how connection worked to enable the follower to actually follow the leaders' lead. I think I thought it was just a matter of getting really good at "guessing" what the leader wanted.
